b. 58-59

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slur to end of bar in A1

Slur to minim in FE (→EE)

Slur to bar 59 in GE

..

In A1 b. 57 is the last one written out by Chopin before b. 58-72, marked in an abridged manner. The slur started in that bar breaks slightly after the middle of empty b. 58, which does not dissipate the doubts of the notation of b. 1-2. Therefore, there are three variants of the ending of the slur: the literal one and two possible interpretations, confirmed by the sources. To the main text we adopt the one present in the principal source, i.e. GE1. In GE2, except for the ending of the slur in b. 55, there is no R.H. slur in the entire line encompassing b. 55-60.

Slur in EE

No slurs in GE2

The slurring of A1 in b. 3-5, of which the discussed bars are a repetition, is incomplete and inaccurate. In the proof copy of FE1 (→EE) it was reproduced in a distorted form, which was proofread by Chopin in the finished FE (there are grounds to consider the ending of the slur added during that proofreading to be inaccurate). The beginning of the slur in GE1 is also almost certainly inaccurate. In the main text we give the latter including a correction resulting from the analysis of all source versions of the notation. The missing slur in GE2 must be a mistake of the engraver: see the previous note on slurs.

No markings in A1 (→FEEE)

Pedalling in GE

..

The fact of adding the pedalling was an improvement added by Chopin probably to [A2] (→GE): in that manuscript this bar was probably marked in an abridged manner as repetition of b. 4

b. 60

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

No mark in A1 (→FEEE) & GE2

Staccato dot in GE1

..

Just like in b. 4 and 28, in the main text we give the staccato dot with which Chopin provided the 1st chord of the bar in [A2] (→GE1). The fact that the mark is missing in GE2 must be an oversight.

b. 65-66

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slur in A1 (→FEEE)

No slur in GE

..

The missing slur in these bars is a patent mistake of the engraver of GE, who forgot the last slur on the page. On the next page, in b. 67 the beginning of the slur in GE1 indicates continuation, yet GE2 – instead of adding the overlooked slur – moved that beginning of the slur so that it would not suggest continuation.
