b. 1

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No title nor dedication in A

Scherzo à Mademoiselle la Comtesse Adèle de Fürstenstein in FC (→GE)

Scherzo à Mademoiselle Adèle de Fürstenstein in FE

La Méditation. Scherzo à Mademoiselle Adèle Fürstenstein in EE1 (→EE2)

Second Scherzo in EE3

..

A is devoid of both the title and dedication (it seems that the aim of the pencilled addition at the top of the 1st page is to identify the manuscript for ordering purposes). In the main text we give them after the complete version of FC (→GE), free from mistakes. FE (→EE1EE2) omitted the title of nobility of the dedication's addressee; there are also a few mistakes in her name and surname. Moreover, EE1 (→EE2) includes an additional, inauthentic title 'La Méditation.' The collective title page of EE3 omitted both that addition and the dedication; however, the Scherzo was marked as second.

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in bar 22 in A (→FE)

Longer slur in FC (→GE)

No slur in EE

..

The slur in FC (→GE) was extended by Chopin; the same applies to analog. b. 152-154. The missing slur in EE must be an oversight.

b. 306

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In A the  before the middle note of the L.H. chord is placed clearly too low, which in this case could have been due to the intention of avoiding collision with the bar line. Fontana correctly interpreted the meaning of that mark in FC (→GE); however, in FE the sharp was initially ascribed to the bottom note of the chord, g. That erroneous version got to EE1 and was then corrected through the addition of a proper  both in the last phase of proofreading of FE and in EE2 (→EE3).

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

7 longer, 5 shorter slurs in A

2 longer, 10 shorter slurs in FC

9 longer, 3 shorter slurs in FE

12 shorter slurs in GE

8 longer, 3 shorter slurs in EE

In A the slurs over the motifs of the bottom voice encompass the quavers only or reach the minim in the next bar. However, the differences are almost certainly of an accidental nature, hence in the main text we unify them, assuming 6-note slurs to be more frequent in A (7 longer, 2 shorter and 3 questionable). Accidental inaccuracies are also present in the remaining sources, except for GE, in which all slurs encompass 5 notes. The majority of the doubts concerning the range of the slurs is due to the ending lines: a slur suggesting continuation is not finished in a new line (b. 418-419 in A and FC, 432-433 in A, 412-413, 420-421 and 428-429 in FE and b. 422-423 in EE). In such situations we give shorter slurs in our transcriptions, just like in b. 426-427 in A and 412-413 in 428-429 in FC, which may be thought to be dubious. EE omitted the slur in b. 420-421. Neither FC nor FE, EE and GE reproduced the notation of the Stichvorlage correctly; however, the total number of inaccuracies in this section is smaller than the first time (b. 310-333).

b. 469-471

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

There is no accidental before the last note in b. 469 and before the penultimate one in b. 471 in A. This patent inaccuracy was corrected by Fontana in FC (→GE). Initially, both bars were deprived of the marks in FE; moreover, in b. 469 the discussed note was printed an octave too high (perhaps considering the use of an octave sign). That version was passed on to EE1, which added only the  in b. 471. In FE in the last phase of proofreading the note in b. 469 was moved to the right pitch, adding a  next to it, yet the mark in b. 471 was not added. In EE2 (→EE3) the pitch of the last note in b. 469 was corrected in accordance with the logic of the passage's structure, yet the  was not added.
