b. 107-108

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No sign in A (→FEEE)

 in FC (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the  hairpin entered by Chopin into FC (→GE).

b. 113

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Accent in A (→FEEE)

No mark in FC (→GE)

..

It is uncertain whether the missing accent in FC (→GE) should be attributed to the copyist's distraction or whether it was added by Chopin in A (along with  in the next bar) after FC had been already prepared. Since in this theme we consistently adhere to the dynamic markings of FC, we do not give this accent in the main text.

b. 117

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No mark in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE)

Staccato dot in GE2 (→GE3)

..

It is difficult to say conclusively whether leaving the R.H. chord without staccato dot was intended by Chopin. The dot in the L.H. and the presence of a dot in analog. b. 249 are an argument in favour of Chopin having overlooked the marking. However, on the other hand, the crotchets in b. 119, 121, 123 and 125, which can be considered analogous, are devoid of dots, in spite of the fact that the corresponding bass notes are provided with dots. According to us, an inaccuracy is more likely in this case (cf. the previous note on slurs); therefore, in the main text we give a dot. The mark was also added in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 117

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Staccato dot in A (→FCGE)

No mark in FE (→EE)

..

The missing staccato dot in FE (→EE) is most probably an oversight of the engraver.

b. 118-124

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

4 different accents in A

4 short accents in FC (→GE)

3 different accents in FE

3 short accents in EE

4 long accents, our alternative suggestion

..

In spite of the clear difference in the length of the accents in b. 118, 120, 122 and 124 visible in A, in the main text we give a unified notation with four short accents, which are more natural in these brilliant, virtuoso passages. At the same time, it is compliant with the notation of the principal source, i.e. FC, although it seems unlikely that Chopin could have interfered with the notation of the copy here. The absence of the last mark in FE (→EE) is an oversight, whereas the shorter first accent in EE – an inaccuracy or revision.
