Issues : Authentic corrections of FE
b. 194-196

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
As in b. 186 and 188, we regard the staccato dot in b. 194 as a remnant of an original version, presumably removed during the proofreading of FE (→EE). The mark was also omitted in GE2, while GE3 not only restored it but also arbitrarily added dots in b. 195-196. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

The version of EE1 repeats the mistake of FE, which was corrected in the last phase of proofreading in FE. In EE2 (→EE3) the correct text was introduced probably on the basis of comparison with analogous b. 63 and 646. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Errors repeated in EE |

The missing tie of c2 is probably an oversight of Chopin in A (→FC→GE1) – those are the last bars on the page, which favours distraction. The tie was added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→EE) as well as in GE2 (→GE3), probably on the basis of analogy with b. 79-80. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: GE revisions , Errors of A , Authentic corrections of FE |

Chopin added five-bar crescendi both in FC (→GE; in GE1 without dashes) and the proofreading of FE (→EE), which we take into account in the main text. It is noteworthy that the additions are fully compatible unlike for the first time (b. 109-116), when they differed in the range of the indication. Chopin added in b. 246 in the proofreading of FE, thus confirming such a position of the indication: see the note to analogous b. 114-117. On the other hand, the marks written by Chopin in FC are also consistent, and in the case of in b. 249, visibly supported by a critical look at the final result of additions: Chopin crossed out the previously written there. In the main text we give the indications of FC, which are a part of a numerous set of indications encompassing the entire theme, which ends here. As an alternative solution we also suggest, next to the version of FE, adding dashes leading cresc. to in b. 249 in FC, as written by Chopin in analogous b. 109-116. The missing indication may be a mistake of GE1, whereas the version of GE2 (→GE3) was entirely repeated after FC in b. 114-117 (cf. b. 235-238). category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of FC |
