b. 194-196

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Staccato dot in A (→FCGE1)

No marks in FE (→EE) & GE2

3 dots in GE3

..

As in b. 186 and 188, we regard the staccato dot in b. 194 as a remnant of an original version, presumably removed during the proofreading of FE (→EE). The mark was also omitted in GE2, while GE3 not only restored it but also arbitrarily added dots in b. 195-196.

b. 195

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Chromatic scale in A (→FCGE, →FE) & EE2 (→EE3)

Diatonic scale in EE1

..

The version of EE1 repeats the mistake of FE, which was corrected in the last phase of proofreading in FE. In EE2 (→EE3) the correct text was introduced probably on the basis of comparison with analogous b. 63 and 646.

b. 197-198

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Two-bar  in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE)

One-and-half-bar  in GE2 (→GE3)

..

A shorter  hairpin seems to be simply a result of carelessness of the engraver of GE2 (→GE3). It is worth noting that a significant number of revisions was performed in that edition, cf. e.g. b. 203-204, yet in the discussed case there is no visible reason for such an intervention.

b. 197-208

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FEEE)

Pedalling in FC (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the pedalling written by Chopin into FC (→GE).

b. 198

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

a in A (→FEEE)

c1 in FC (→GE)

..

The version of A (→FEEE) is the original one, probably left inadvertently, and changed by Chopin in FC (→GE).
A similar situation is to be found in b. 649.
