Slurs

b. 524

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No slur in A (→FEEE)

Slur in FC (→GE)

..

The authenticity of the slur of FC (→GE) is not excluded, yet it is highly unlikely, according to us.

b. 531-536

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

3-note slurs in A (→FCGE)

4-note slurs in FE (→EE)

..

In b. 531 and 535 in the main text we give the unequivocal whole-bar slurs of A (→FCGE). However, the longer slurs of FE (→EE) are probably a result of Chopin's proofreading: there is no visible reason for which the engraver would have complicated his work with asymmetrical slurs. Therefore, they can be considered an equivalent variant.

b. 532-533

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur to e3 in A & GE

No slur in FC

Slur to d3 in FE (→EE)

..

The missing slur in FC must be an oversight, corrected in GE. The shorter slur of FE (→EE) is probably also a mistake.

b. 533-534

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in A (→FCGE), EE & FED

No slur in FE

..

The L.H. slur overlooked in FE was added in EE. Chopin added it also in FED.

b. 539-540

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

The range of the slur over the L.H. crotchets, present only in A, is unclear: its beginning falls on between the 1st and 2nd octave in b. 539. According to us, it is much more likely that the slur starts from the beginning of the bar, which is indicated by the shape of the slur.
