Slur to f in A

No slur in FC

Slur to d1 in FE (→EE) & GE

..

When interpreted literally, the slur of A encompasses only the quavers. A comparison with the analogous figures proves Chopin's inaccuracy, corrected already in FE (→EE). The missing slur in FC must be an oversight of the copyist, corrected already in GE1 (→GE2GE3).

Short accents in GE2 (→GE3)

Long accents, our alternative suggestion

..

Despite significant differences in the length of the marks in b. 250, 252, 254 & 256 visible in A, we consider all of them to be accents. The mark in b. 250 in itself could be regarded as a long accent; however, in the context of two subsequent ones, we interpret it as a short accent. Due to the reasons discussed in analogous b. 118-124, in the main text we give a notation unified with four short accents; such a solution was also applied in GE2 (→GE3). The two missing marks in FC (→GE1) are most probably an oversight, while the changes introduced in EE, with differentiated accents for both hands and vertical accents, the latter being typical of that edition – a revision.

b. 263-264

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

Just like in b. 131-132, in the main text we keep the notation of the bars filled with rests, used by Chopin in A (→FC) and applied in GE2 too. The changes introduced in the remaining editions, i.e. replacing both bars with one double bar in FE (→EE) and providing the rests with digits, cannot come from Chopin.

b. 268-269

Separate slurs in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE) & GE3

Continuous slur in GE2

..

The reviser of GE2 assimilated the slurring over the b. 268-269 and 288-289 with the slurring of an analogous phrase in b. 369-370. It is difficult to find a justification for that decision: the unquestionable text was changed in three places (also in b. 390-391) on the basis of the fourth, questionable one (the notation of FC in b. 369-370 actually does not suggest a combination of the slurs). Therefore, it comes as no surprise that GE3 returned to the authentic version.

f tied in A (→FC) & GE2 (→GE3)

f repeated in FE (→EE) & GE1

..

The missing tie of f in FE (→EE) is another of the series of the mistakes of FE, concerning the ties in this section of the Scherzo, which has just begun. This time it was also the engraver of GE1 that committed a mistake. A corresponding tie was added in GE2 (→GE3).
