Staccato dot in A (→FEEE)

No mark in FC (→GE)

A (→FEEE) features a staccato dot only in b. 54, yet in FC one can see a crossing-out of a small mark over the note ending the quaver motif both in b. 54 and 56. In addition, both bars reveal other minor corrections – dragging the slurs from b. 53 and 55 to the quavers at the beginning of b. 54 and 56. According to us, it was almost certainly Chopin that extended the slur in b. 53-54, since the slur of A also does not reach b2, and the copyist had no reason to change a correctly reproduced notation. Therefore, it is highly likely that it is also the remaining corrections that were performed by the composer:

  • he extended the slur in b. 55-56, thus correcting the copyist's inaccuracy;
  • he added a staccato dot over e2 in b. 56 and then crossed it out;
  • he also crossed out the dot in b. 54, probably having considered staccato marks superfluous over such short values. (The spacing of rests in b. 54 and 56 in A suggests that the initial quavers were originally written as crotchets.)

In the main text we take into account the Chopinesque proofreading and omit the dot in the discussed bar. See also analog. b. 186-196.
