  b. 274-276

Slur to bar 274 in A (→FEEE)

Slur to end of bar 276 in FC

Slur beyond bar 276 in GE1

Slur to bar 276 in GE2 (→GE3)

The range of the phrase mark over the top stave in b. 274-276 and analog. is not entirely clear in A. In two places, in b. 274 & 295, Chopin crossed out the endings of the phrase marks going beyond those bars; however, the first time he led the newly entered phrase mark to the end of the bar, yet the second time – only to the e1 note (most likely). A similar discrepancy is present in the two remaining places, in which the phrase marks were extended: in b. 376 the phrase mark reaches the note, whereas in 397 – the end of the bar. As far as the phrasing is concerned, both versions mean the same, yet the phrase marks reaching the end of the bar emphasise the need for holding the e1 minim (tenuto slur). Taking into account the fact that it is the only note of that chord that is supposed to be audible also on the 3rd beat of the bar, which was not emphasised by separating it from the g-e1 sixth, in the main text in all places we suggest a tenuto slur (to the end of the bar).

In discussed b. 274, the shortening of the phrase mark was not included in FC, which means that the correction was most probably introduced into A already after the copy had been prepared. Moreover, the copyist drew the slur to the end of bar 276, last on the page, which resulted in GE1 erroneously joining it with the next phrase mark. GE2 (→GE3) reinstated a phrase mark ending in bar 276 and entered such a longer slur into all analogous places.
