Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 312-314

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

No dashes in FE (→EE)

Dashes in GE

Possible interpretation of FE

Different interpretation

..

Prolonging the range of crescendo to , like it was performed in GE, or even further, is justified – an accidental omission of such dashes is often to be found in first editions; it could have also happened to Chopin, e.g. at a transition to a new line. Moreover, it cannot be ruled out that in bar 313 is written inaccurately. In the main text, however, we preserve the version of the principal source, i.e. FE (→EE), since in spite of suggestions of nuances, perhaps not intended by Chopin, that version correctly conveys the general dynamic image of that fragment.

b. 333

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

Slur to 2nd g1 in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur to first g1 in GE3

..

Leading the slur to the 2nd semiquaver of the 2nd half of the bar is most probably an inaccuracy of FE (→EE,GE1GE2). In the main text, we shorten the slur, since we believe that the slurs over analogous motifs in this and the next phrase should end in the same place.

b. 358-359

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

In FE, the passage was probably reproduced strictly after [A] – it is missing naturals before the 4th, 9th, 11th and 12th semiquavers in bar 358, whereas in bar 359 accidentals are present only before the first two semiquavers. In the remaining editions, naturals were added – GE added all of them, while EE the majority of them (without the 4th and 9th notes in bar 358).

b. 360

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

The notation of accidentals in FE is inaccurate – naturals are missing before the first d1 and before d3 and g2 in the last triplet, whereas the superfluous  was placed before b1 in the 2nd half of the bar. In the remaining editions, all necessary accidentals were added, while EE also removed the superfluous ones.

b. 361-363

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

In FE, only some of the g notes (in various octaves) are provided with necessary naturals – G and g2 in bar 361 and G-g in bar 363 (Chopin would often repeat accidentals before tied notes, which we do not apply in our transcriptions – see General Editorial Principles). All necessary accidentals were already added both in GE and EE.
