Accents in GE3

Same accents suggested by the editors

The four-bar phrase (bars 456-459) appears four times (in two variants). The majority of the elements of the notation is repeated in all its appearances, hence we openly unify single inaccuracies in the main text. Below, we discuss the problematic situations concerning markings in groups of analogous bars.

  • Accents in the L.H. in bars 456-457. First appearances of figures were often associated with an intentional, slightly different marking. However, in this case it seems to be highly unlikely, since accents appear in all subsequent repetitions of this four-bar section, both in  and in  (in total, in four out of 6 figures). Therefore, in the main text we add accents here, signalling it with brackets. Omissions of the accents in the two remaining bars (bars 464 and 468) are of clearly accidental nature and we openly add them in the main text there.
  • Accents in the L.H. in bar 458, 462, 466 and 470. In this case, the figures in the R.H. are devoid of the accents on the 2nd beat, hence it is likely that they were meant to be absent also in the L.H. Therefore, the only accent in those bars (bar 462) would have to be considered erroneous. We suggest this interpretation in the main text; however, we add the version with accents as an alternative solution.
  • Accents in the R.H. in bars 468-469. We add them – in brackets – after bars 460-461.
