The variants written in the pupils' copies in bars 58-59 and 61 pose difficulties concerning their strict interpretation, for they are all written in a more or less draft manner, hence some of the performing aspects remain speculative:

  • Extension of the roulade at the end of bar 58 in FEH defines only the final point in the form of the c4 minim at the beginning of bar 59. According to us, there is no doubt that it indicates a repetition of the last eight notes of the roulade in the basic version an octave higher.
  • The passage written on the margin of FES next to the line including bars 59-62 does not contain any indication where it should be inserted. Two possibilities emerge: over the 5 last quavers of the sextuplet in the L.H. in bar 59 or over the group of quavers in bar 61, encompassed with a slur. The latter seems to be more likely due to the perfect sound and pianistic compliance with the adjacent chords. 
  • None of the two entries including the repeated c3 notes in bar 59 is unambiguous. The entry is of the most draft nature – both the rhythmic values and the pitch of the three added notes is undefined. The entry in FEH is written in a more precise manner, yet in this case the interpretation also requires taking unobvious decisions regarding the pitch of the notes and their placement. After analysing both entries together, we assumed that they indicate groups of three (FED) or four (FEH) small c3 quavers preceding the 4th beat of the bar. In the case of the FEH variant, the intended rhythm can also be compliant with the placement of the entry, hence on the 2nd beat of the bar.
  • The figure added in bar 61 in FEH casts doubts on the pitch of the 2nd note in the 2nd group of demisemiquavers, on the manner of combining it with the printed text (after the arpeggiated chord or instead of it) and on the completeness of the notation (it may be a model of a longer figuration).
