b. 594

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Fifth in FE, literal reading

Only minim in GE

Appoggiatura & minim in EE

Acciaccatura – our alternative suggestion

..

The vague and most probably erroneous notation of FE was probably supposed to look like the one applied two bars later – a d2 minim preceded by an a2 grace note. We adopt this obvious interpretation in the main text; it was applied already in EE. In turn, the version of GE may be the original version, completed by Chopin in the last proofreading of FE. We give a short grace note as an acceptable variant – see bar 609.

8-note slur in FE (probable reading)

No slur in GE

9-note slur in FE (possible reading→EE)

..

In FE, it is unclear whether the last note of the bottom voice should be encompassed with the slur or not. In the main text, we lead the slur to the penultimate note in the belief that Chopin used here portato articulation, which he marked with dots under a slur. In EE, the slur encompasses the entire group of 9 notes, which can be considered a variant, since such an interpretation is equally likely. The missing slur in GE and the con forza indication in FE, placed too low, which impeded drawing the slur, suggests that the slur was added in the last phase of proofreading of FE

g2 in FE (→EE)

b2 in GE

..

The b2 note, featured in GE as the 4th quaver of the bottom voice, is either the original version or, which is much more likely considering analogous bar 623 and 627, a Terzverschreibung error. The traces of proofreading visible in FE prove that the version was initially present also in this edition, but it was changed in the last phase of proofreading.
