Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 526-528

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Pedalling in bar 526 & 528 in FE (→EE)

No markings in bar 528 in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

Missing pedalling indications in bar 528 (as well as in 529) in GE may mean that Chopin added them only just in the last proofreading of FE. In spite of that, the pedalling of FE (→EE) raises doubts – in all three analogous places (bars 155-157, 171-173 and 510-512), pedal depressed at the beginning of the theme is held incessantly to the closest harmonic change. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, in which, if we include the markings in brackets, we obtain the actual pedalling of FE and if we omit them – the authentic pedalling of the analogous phrase in exposition (bars 171-173).

b. 529

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No markings in GE

Like in bar 528, the pedalling could have been added in the last proofreading of FE (→EE), which explains its absence in GE.

b. 537

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

b repeated in FE

b tied in GE1 (→GE2) & EE

b tied & augmented in GE3

..

The version of FE is almost certainly erroneous – cf. all the remaining analogous figures. Both in GE and EE, the tie of b was added, yet only GE3 added a dot extending this note.

The visible traces of changes prove that two identical Terzverschreibung errors were committed in FE – b1 instead of d2 on the last semiquaver of the 2nd beat of each of those bars.

In GE1, the first crotchet is a b1-b2 octave. This patent mistake could have been committed in FE, in which, however, Chopin corrected it in the last phase of proofreading. The mistake in GE1 was corrected already in GE2 (→GE3).
