Slurs in FE (→EE)

Ties in GE

The bottom curved lines of FE (→EE) do not combine the bottommost (outermost) notes, like it was reproduced in GE, but pairs of lower middle notes, d1-c1 and c1-b. In FE, the slurs are not always accurately placed (see, e.g. the line above, bars 554-555); however, among the discussed curved lines, only the second could be considered to have been printed higher due to lack of space. Therefore, in the main text we preserve the notation of the principal source (FE). On the other hand, if [A] had contained ties –  – the engraver of FE could have easily misinterpreted that notation (in the above example, we reproduce the Chopinesque manner of writing ties and seconds in chords – cf. e.g. Atut, ties in bars 103-104 and 106-107 and seconds in bar 3 and 8). Therefore, the version of GE could be considered to be an alternative interpretation of the notation of FE, perhaps compliant with Chopin's intention.
