  b. 474

 in FE (→EE)

 in GE1 (→GE2)

No sign in GE3

Four  marks in bars 474-477 in FE (→EE) raise doubts about their placement, range and consequently about their meaning. The mark in bar 474 is placed over the L.H., whereas the remaining three over the R.H.; however, according to us, all four apply to the middle voice, moving in the interval of sixth in crotchets: .
The differences in placement most probably result from misinterpretation of [A] in bar 474 and lacking space between the staves in bars 475-477. However, any attempt at unifying the  hairpin would have developed new relationships between the hairpins, verbal indications and parts of both hands; relationships whose compliance with Chopin's intention would be difficult to prove. Due to this reason, in the main text we leave the notation of the base source, in the belief that its possible inaccuracies will not impede the pianists from a convincing interpretation of the composer's intention.

It was most probably the engraver of GE1 (→GE2) that reversed the mark in bar 474. In GE3, the erroneous mark was overlooked, perhaps by accident.
