Hairpin in FE (→EE)

Hairpin in GE

Hairpin suggested by the editors

..

The differences in the range of the  hairpin is probably a result of the engravers' inaccuracy. In the main text, we give a hairpin modelled after the mark in analogous bars 53-54.

Long accent in FE, contextual interpretation

 hairpin in GE

Short accent in EE

..

The mark in FE paired with  denotes a long accent in this context. A slight prolongation of the mark in GE made it clearly a  hairpin. EE correctly considered the mark to be an accent and reproduced it as a standard, short accent. The same applies to bar 88.

b. 98-99

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

Beginning of hairpin in bar 98 in FE

Beginning of hairpin in bar 99 in GE & EE

..

In the main text, we reproduce the hairpin of FE, probably conveying Chopin's notation in [A] in the most faithful manner. Both GE and EE slightly shortened the mark, shifting its beginning under the first note in bar 99.
