Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 142

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

There are no accidentals before the 4th and 8th semiquavers in FE (→EE,GE). The natural put before c4, the last note in the bar, proves that Chopin considered the  from before the 1st quaver of the bar to be valid up until this place, thus regarding the aforementioned notes as c2 and c3 (cf. a similar situation in b. 144). In accordance with the contemporary rules of chromatic orthography, we provide the discussed notes with sharps.

In FE, there are no naturals before the bottom voice d1/2/3 notes. The last one is absolutely necessary; in spite of that, it was not added in any of the subsequent editions, in which the additions were limited to a  before d1 at the beginning of the bar. Moreover, FE (→GE) are lacking in the  before c3 in the 2nd figure; the accidental was added in EE. Significantly, the previous note, d3, is preceded with a , which was apparently understood as a cautionary accidental due to the d notes in the bottom voice and in the L.H.

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

The only cautionary accidental in FE (→GE1GE2) is the  before a3. EE added a  before a2 in the L.H., while GE3 naturals before c2 and c4. In the main text we include all these accidentals.

FE (→GE,EE) unnecessarily repeated a  before g2, the top note of the third on the 2nd beat of the bar.

b. 189

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

Like in b. 45, FE repeated a  before a, the bottom note of the penultimate L.H. quaver. It is probably a result of the latest stage of proofreading of FE, since this accidental is absent both in GE and EE.
