b. 57

b2-a2 in FE (→GE)

a2-g2 in EE

Like in b. 56, EE feature an earlier version of this place, corrected by Chopin in the last stage of proofreading of FE (→GE). It is proven by, e.g. minor print defects resulting from introducing corrections – the ledger lines of both notes are placed too low and the b2 notehead inaccurately covers the remaining part of the removed a2 notehead. In the final version, the melodic line is more consistent and distinct:

  • The exposed appearance of b2 in the ending of the run refers to the b2 crotchet from which it started. The omission of g2 naturally integrates the ornament with the final fragment of the phrase in the next bar, in which the appearance of g2 eventually closes the whole phrase.
  • The diminished a2-e2 fourth, left suspended, adds expression to this fragment, both melodically and harmonically, evoking the Chopinesque c-b-e-a chord.
