b. 10-11

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

Slur from g2 in FE (→GE)

Slur from f2 in EE

..

It is unclear how the difference between FE and EE occurred. The shape of the slur in FE indicates its possible proofreading, yet there are no visible traces that would allow us to guess the original version. It could have been the longer slur of EE; however, it is likely that the slur of EE is unrelated to the proofreading of FE and is a result of a mistake or revision.

(|), our variant suggestion

..

The missing  at the end of b. 36 in FE (→GE1), although not confusing, seems to be an inaccuracy, so that GE2 (→GE3) added the mark. However, it is quite likely that it was the  mark in b. 37 that was unnecessarily placed by the engraver of FE. Chopin used a similar pedalling on a number of occasions, e.g. in the Nocturne in F Major, Op. 15 No. 1, b. 72-73, the Ballade in F Minor, Op. 52, b. 12-13, the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 58, III mov., b. 118-119. A version without a repeated  mark at the beginning of b. 37 is featured in EE, which, unless it is a mistake, may be a proof that it was added in the last phase of proofreading of FE. In effect, the source versions define two potentially authentic pedallings; therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution in which the optional pedal change at the beginning of b. 37 is left at the discretion of the performer.

Grace note in FE (→GE)

No grace note in EE

Grace note & arpeggio suggested by the editors

..

EE include the original version of this place, completed by Chopin in the last phase of proofreading of FE (→GE): in FE in the place of the grace note there is a trace of removal of the  raising c2 to c2. By adding a grace note before the chord, Chopin would have probably meant one of his favourite means: arpeggio with repeated bottom note; however, there was no place left for the arpeggio's wavy line. Due to the above reason, we explicitly insert an arpeggio sign in the main text.

Fingering in FE (→GE) & EE2

No fingering in EE1

..

The missing Chopinesque fingering in EE may indicate that it was added in the last phase of proofreading of FE. The digits were added in EE2 most probably on the basis of the finished FE or GE.

No indication in FE (→GE)

dolce in EE

..

The presence of dolce in EE may be explained by a revision, in this case not based on a comparison with an analogous place. It is also likely that it is an authentic, earlier indication, removed in FE (→EE) in the last phase of proofreading.
