Slurs

b. 87-95

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

..

In the main text we omit the additional slur over the R.H. triplet, present in b. 87 in all sources: cf. General Editorial Principlesp. 16. In EE a similar slur is also present in the L.H. in b. 95.

b. 96

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

Slur to end of bar in FE

Slur to d1 in GE1 & EE

Slur to in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The sources differ in the range of the last L.H. slur in this section. In the main text we reproduce the notation of FE, in which the slur reaches the end of the bar, and the final part of the slur resembles a 'slur-tenuto'. This detail was not reproduced both in EE and GE1, in which the slur reaches the last crotchet. In GE2 (→GE3) the slur was adjusted to the bottom L.H. voice, which made it even shorter.

b. 97-100

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

No slurs in FE (→GE)

Slurs in EE

..

The missing four slurs in FE (→GE) must be an oversight, perhaps of Chopin himself. Therefore, in the main text we include the obvious addition introduced in EE.

b. 100-101

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

Slur to end of bar 100 in FE (→GE,EE)

Slur to bar 101 suggested by the editors

..

According to us, there is a strong likelihood that the ending of the slur was inaccurately reproduced in the sources. Therefore, in the main text we prolong the slur after the analogous place in b. 56-57, in which the slur also encompasses the fifth that melodically and harmonically closes the figuration of the previous bars.

b. 111-112

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

Slur in bar 111 in FE (→GE)

Slur to bar 112 in EE

..

The longer slur of EE is most probably a revision based on a comparison with analogous bars, e.g. b. 67-68 and 70-71. According to us, Chopin probably added the top slur as the simplest manner of correcting the inaccurate bottom slur, thus abandoning its proofreading.
