Issues : Errors in FE

b. 353-354

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

b3 repeated in A (→GE)

b3 tied in FE (→EE)

..

According to us, the tie of bis a result of a mistake of the engraver of FE (→EE). It would be difficult to assume that Chopin would have liked to deprive this figure of its initial fourth that is key for capturing the relationship to the antithetic figure, beginning with a fifth, in the preceding bar.

Long accent in A

Short accent in GE & EE

No mark in FE

..

Shortened accents are a very frequent inaccuracy of GE, whereas the omission of the sign in FE is a patent mistake, revised then in EE.

2 long accents in A

Short accent in GE1

No marks in FE

Short accents next to  in EE

Long accent in GE2

..

According to us, all omitted and shortened accents in GE and FE are random inaccuracies. Moving the accents closer to  is a completely arbitrary revision of EE, unifying all these bars with the notation of analogous bars 29-32 (also erroneous) – see bars 369-375

Wedge in A

Dot in GE

No mark in FE (→EE)

..

The clear wedge written in A was reproduced in GE as a dot. In FE the sign is copied so inaccurately that it cannot be considered a staccato dot; this explains its absence in EE. A possible removal of the dot in FE by Chopin, which could have left such a trace, should be excluded, according to us.

Slur in A (→GE)

2 slurs in FE (→EE)

..

It is difficult to say whether the division of the slur in FE (→EE) is a consequence of a mistake of the engraver of FE or whether the slurs were corrected in GE1 in the last phase of proofreading, already after having sent the copies to Paris. In the main text we give the only authentic version of A (→GE).
