Slur over triplet in GE1 (→FEEE)

Slur in GE2

We interpret the imprecise notation of A – in bar 174 there is no ending of the slur started on the previous page, in bar 173 – in the main text as Chopin wrote it in analogous bars 169-170 and 171-172. The absence of the first slur in GE1 (→FEEE) must be an inaccuracy. GE2 repeated the slur included in GE (→FE) in bars 169-170.

Triplet slur in EE

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

We interpret the slur of A, started at the end of a page in bar 173 and unfinished on the next page, in accordance with the notation of bars 169-179 and the slurs in the R.H. in bars 169-170 and 171-172. The absence of the slur over (under) the triplet in bar 174 must be Chopin's oversight. The slur of GE (→FE) is probably a result of a Chopin proofreading of GE1, whereas the slur of EE – of a revision. In the main text we give two slurs modelled after the slurs in the R.H.

Slurs in A

Dots under slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slurs and dots adopted by us were introduced – most probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of GE (→FEEE). (FE overlooked the slur in bar 182.) There are no dots in A, and the slurs are marked inaccurately, so that it is uncertain whether they are supposed to encompass the whole bars or only the 2nd and 3rd crotchets. Similarly in bars 353-360.

Slur to g1 in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

Slur to a1 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A bar 199 is the last one on the page, which contributed to the fact that the range of the slur in the L.H. is vague – the slur started in this bar suggests continuation, yet there is no ending thereof on the next page. The inaccuracy was corrected in GE1 (→FEEE), perhaps at Chopin's request; however, it is questionable that he would be thinking about a slur that would not embrace the last note of this scale passage (cf. the slurs in the R.H. in this place). Due to this fact, it is the slur led to the beginning of bar 201, in accordance with GE2, that we adopt to the main text.

Shorter slurs in A (literal reading→GE1FE)

Longer slurs in A (contextual interpretation)

Shorter slurs in both hands in EE

Longer slurs in both hands in GE2

..

The range of both slurs is vague in A – the first does not exceed the bar line, whereas in the second one, one can see a slur over the triplet. This is how they were interpreted in GE1 (→FEEE). However, the slurs in subsequent, identical figures, extended in a few places, prove that Chopin wanted them to reach a crotchet on the 1st or the 3rd beat of bar 294 and analog. each time. We give this interpretation, introduced already in GE2, in the main text. The slurs in the L.H. added in EE and GE2 are an arbitrary revision both in these bars and in the entire section until bar 308 – see the note on bars 297-298.
