b. 63-64

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Small-print f1 in A (→GE)

Normal-print octave in FE (→EE)

Small-print octave suggested by the editors

Replacing the single fnote with an f-foctave in FE (→EE) is certainly a change introduced by Chopin – cf. 1st mov., bar 348. However, the same cannot be said of printing this octave with notes of a normal size, in both bars. There had to be a misunderstanding at the time of implementing the proofreading, since adding this octave to the solo part is unimaginable, as far as the logic of the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra is concerned.

F & f in A (→GE)

F1 & F in FE (→EE)

Moving the 2nd crotchet an octave lower is undoubtedly a result of a Chopin proofreading of FE (→EE). He introduced an identical change in an analogous situation in bar 76.

E in A (→GE)

G in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we give G introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→EE). FE1 overlooked a  before this note, which was then added in FE2.

E & e in A & GE2 (staccato)

E & e in GE1 (no dot)

E1 & E (no dot) in FE (→EE)

E1 & E (staccato) suggested by the editors

Same as in the previous phrase, Chopin moved the 2nd crotchet in the part of both hands an octave lower while proofreading FE (→EE). The given variants include the presence or absence of the staccato dot overlooked in GE1 (→FEEE), together with three previous ones.

Chord with e1 in A (→GE)

Chord without e1 in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The version of FE (without e1) could be considered a result of Chopin's proofreading if it were not for a mistake in this chord present in FE1 – it is a g (with a ) instead of that is the bottom note there. The mistake is obvious and it was corrected in FE2 (→EE); however, it means that Chopin did not notice such serious mistake in the chord he was just proofreading when he was possibly removing e1. It seems to be impossible, hence the absence of this note must be considered an oversight. Therefore, we include it in the main text, but only in brackets, since the composer could have accepted a version without ewhile proofreading FE2 in this place.
