Issues : Errors in FE

b. 414

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In FE (→EE1EE2) a  was placed before b2, which is a mistake. Such a developed version, with a b2-dthird, is conspicuous only when performing the piece with orchestra (din the viola part), which may have contributed to the absence of a correction in EE1, generally carefully revised. In EE3 the  before b2 was preserved; in addition, a second one was added, lowering d3 to d3

Slur in A & GE2

2 slurs in GE1

Slur in bar 416 in FE (→EE)

..

The division of the slur in GE1 is a distortion of slurring, characteristic of this edition. In any case, the absence of the slur in bar 415 in FE (→EE) suggests that the slur in bar 415 was added in GE1 only in the last phase of proofreading, as a simplified correction of a too short slur, encompassing only bar 416.

Fifth in A & GE2

Third in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The version of A with the b-ffifth is most probably a remaining element of an earlier version of this bar, with d as the bass note (see the previous note). In GE1 (→FE1) Chopin introduced a third instead of the fifth; however, the proofreading was performed inaccurately, forgetting about the  before the bottom note. FE2 tried to correct this mistake, yet the added sign was misplaced before the top note. The correct text appears just in EE.

b. 423

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In FE the 1st beat is written an octave lower and it was supposed to be encompassed with an octave sign, which, however, begins only from the 2nd beat of the bar. In EE1 the octave sign starts only from the next bar, which seems to be a result of a misunderstanding during an attempt to correct the mistake of FE. The subsequent EE already include the correct text, compliant with A (→GE).

Slur in bars 423-424 in A (→GE)

Slur in bar 423 in FE

2 slurs in EE

..

The part of the slur falling on bar 424, the first one in a new line, was overlooked in FE. This patent deficiency was completed in EE by adding a separate slur in this bar.
