Slur in A, contextual interpretation

Different interpretation of #Wn1

2 slurs in EE

The phrasing and articulation of these bars do not clearly follow from the sources. In A, the first chord in bar 54 is provided with a staccato dot (like the previous one). The next two chords are devoid of indications, which most probably points to the same performance, i.e. staccato. It is only bar 56 that is encompassed with a slur, whereas the manner of notation may suggest leading the slur to the beginning of bar 57. The markings were repeated in GE2 and we adopt them to the main text (taking into account the contextual interpretation of the ending of the slur). In turn, in GE1 (→FEEE), there is a slur running to the end of bar 56 over the first chord in bar 54 instead of a dot. The slur could have been added by Chopin; however, its authenticity seems to be questionable, particularly the moment it starts – combination of the 1st beat of bar 54 with the part that continues is contrary to the instrumentation, not to mention the staccato dots written in A at the beginning of bars 54 and 58. We suggest two conjectures in our systems, based on the assumption that the engraver committed a mistake at the time of performing the Chopinesque proofreading; however, it can be likely that the slur does not come from Chopin at all. The slur added in bars 56-57 in EE may be a repetition of the curved line combining the same notes in bars 55-56, erroneous or intentional (revision).
