Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A, contextual interpretation

Slur in GE1 (→FE)

Slurs in both hands in EE & GE2

Slurs in both hands, suggested by the editors

Similarly as two previous slurs in bar 51, the slur of A is a part of indication of an irregular group (embracing the entire bar); however, it also performs the articulation-phrasing function. Therefore, one can have doubts concerning its range, since the slur in the R.H. in bar 53 written on the next page of A clearly continues the discussed slur. In the main text, we assume that it is the second slur that determines Chopin's intention in this place. The slur of GE1 (→FE) is clearly erroneous, which was revised in EE and GE2, by extending it to the end of the bar.

The precision of articulation indications is noteworthy (wedges, dots and accents), unfortunately, it was not reproduced in the editions. According to us, there is no doubt that all deviations from the version of A result from an inaccurate interpretation of the manuscript and from mistakes.

Both the slur and the aforementioned indications are written in A only for the R.H., which was most probably related to the graphic layout of this bar adopted in the manuscript, resulting in a lack of space for introducing indications over the note heads of the L.H. Due to this reason, in the main text we add all articulation indications in the L.H. As far as the slur is concerned, it was already performed in EE and GE2.
