Issues : Errors resulting from corrections

The undoubtedly erroneous slur of GE1 (→FE→EE) is a result of coinciding two factors:
In the main text, we give an interpretation of the notation of A, which we find accurate, adopted in GE2. When interpreted literally, the slur of A begins only from the e1-g1 third. However, it is highly likely that Chopin imagined an extension of the slur until the corrected version of the top stave, so that it would start earlier. In the main text we adopt – in accordance with GE2 – the f1 crotchet as the first note embraced with the slur, yet the version of GE1 (→FE→EE) with a slur running already from a1 seems to be possible too, as an interpretation of the notation of A. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccurate slurs in A , Errors resulting from corrections , GE revisions |

The sign was reproduced inaccurately both in FE and EE, each time shortening the ordered time of holding the pedal. In some of the copies of GE1a, graphic retouches aimed probably at eliminating defects around the slur in bars 102-103 were performed (the defects are visible on the copy presented in our system). While performing corrections, the sign discussed in bar 99 was deleted by mistake. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Errors resulting from corrections , Errors in GE , EE inaccuracies |

In A (→GE1→FE) the dot extending the value of the crotchet was inadvertently written next to f1. The mistake was corrected in EE and GE2. The traces of erasures visible in A suggest that Chopin first inadvertently wrote dots next to both notes and then he mistook them again, deleting the one that should have stayed. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors resulting from corrections , GE revisions , Rhythmic errors , Errors of A |

According to us, the version of the editions is a result of an unfinished proofreading of a mistake of GE1: as a result of the slightly inaccurate notation of A, the A-a octave was probably initially placed only on the 3rd quaver in the bar. The mistake was corrected, by adding an octave on the 2nd quaver and a tie of both notes, yet the tie of the bottom note was overlooked. In addition, such a scenario explains well the original reason of the excessive number of accents in this place. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors resulting from corrections , Errors in GE , GE revisions |
