Issues : Errors in FE

b. 203

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

FE1 has a  before the topmost note of the chord. This striking mistake was corrected in FE2. According to us, the error could have been caused by both staves being graphically similar in this place – the crotchet in the top voice on the 3rd space and a minim (-s) in the bottom one (the change of the rhythmic value of the topmost note must have been introduced later). In such a situation the flat would be a repetition of the sign written – unnecessarily – before e on the bottom stave.

b. 207

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Dots & long accent in A

Short accent in GE1 & EE2 (→EE3)

No marks in FE (→EE1)

Dots & short accent in GE2

..

Missing dots in the majority of the editions are a result of inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE). The signs were added in GE2. Moreover, in GE the accent was reproduced as short, whereas in FE (→EE1) it was completely overlooked.

b. 208

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Grace note in A (→GE) & FED

Grace note after minim in FE

Crotchet in EE

..

The dappoggiatura, in FE placed erroneously on the right-hand side of the minim, was misinterpreted in EE as a crotchet in the reduction of the orchestra part, which is also a patent mistake. Chopin introduced the correct text in FED

b. 209

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

In GE (→FE) the entire chord was erroneously printed with notes of a normal size. The mistake was not repeated in EE.

b. 211

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In the editions (except GE2), the solo piano phrase in bars 209-210 is written with an octave sign. In GE1 (→FEEE1) the dashes marking its range are erroneously led until the fminim in bar 211; there is also no loco indication following them. As a result, when interpreted literally, the minim is an f3, although in this context it is easy to see a mistake. In spite of this, in GE2, in which the entire phrase was written without an octave sign (as in our main text), the minim in bar 211 was also moved an octave higher, at the same time confirming its erroneous pitch. In EE2 (→EE3) the range of the octave sign was marked correctly.
