In this case, the change of slurring introduced in GE1 (→FE→EE, →GE2) may come from Chopin. It is indicated by:

  • intense corrections of slurs in GE1 in the next line (bars 119-121);
  • an atypical to the manner of the engraver of GE1 place of division of the slur (not on a bar line or in the middle of a bar);
  • a correction visible in A at the beginning of bar 117 – the slur from the preceding bar originally reached the e1 semiquaver. It suggests that Chopin considered beginning a new slur from the 2nd crotchet in the bar (together with a new chord in the L.H.), hence exactly as we see it in GE1 in bar 118.

On the other hand, the clear and uncorrected mistakes in reproducing slurs in bars 115-117, preceding this place, dictate caution in the assessment of the slurring of GE1. Due to this reason, in the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic slur of A.

Both ways of pedalling, which can be deduced from the inaccurate and obscure notation of the sources – above all A – may be considered equal, according to us; their sound effect is very similar anyway. In the main text we give a possible interpretation of corrections and entries visible in A. The second proposed version, also referring to the notation of A (interpreted differently), reproduces at the same time the notation of the editions, free from errors. In particular, we correct the erroneous oversight of markings in the middle of bar 121, in which Chopin overlooked the  sign and in GE1 (→FE→EE) there was  instead of  (cf. bar 283).

In A one can see that the roulade had initially only 14 notes, since the c2 note was inserted later. Strictly speaking, Chopin remade the original c2 to a  and added one note (c2) to the left-hand side and a second (c2) to the right-hand side. He also changed the marking of the number of notes in the group from 14 to 15.

In spite of the correction of the slur of A, which Chopin extended to the g1 crotchet, the editions embraced with it only the group of small notes. Chopin restored the correct phrasing with an entry in FED.
