Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 73

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In FE (→EE) the slur is led already from the crotchet at the beginning of the bar. It is most probably an inaccuracy caused by a clumsy graphic layout of GE1, where not enough space was dedicated for the 1st half of the bar so that the slur, placed high, seems to point to this crotchet. The beginning of the slur of FE, even if we assume that it intentionally applies to the Fminim, remains practically equal to the notation of A (→GE), hence we do not consider this version to be an actual variant, due to its most probably accidental origin.

Grace note f! in A

Grace note g1 in GE (→FEEE)

..

It is not quite clear whether the change of pitch of the grace note is a result of Chopin's proofreading in GE1 or of the engraver's distraction. In any case, the fingering written in this place by Chopin in FED proves his acceptance of this version. Cf. the adjacent note as well as the 2nd mov., bar 76

No sign in GE1a

..

The  sign was reproduced inaccurately both in FE and EE, each time shortening the ordered time of holding the pedal.

In some of the copies of GE1a, graphic retouches aimed probably at eliminating defects around the slur in bars 102-103 were performed (the defects are visible on the copy presented in our system). While performing corrections, the  sign discussed in bar 99 was deleted by mistake.

Long accents in A (→GE1)

Short accents in FE (→EE) & GE2

..

The change of the font of accents is a characteristic inaccuracy of first editions. In this case, it is the correct interpretation of Chopin's intention in GE1 that is more puzzling, since the first two signs in A are clearly longer than the remaining two and one could expect they would have been reproduced as a  hairpin. Cf. bar 100.

Tie & slur in A & GE2

Slur e1-c1 in GE1

Slur d1-c1 in FE (→EE)

..

Out of the two curved lines written in A, the tie of eand the motivic slur of d1-c1, GE1 made one slur embracing e1-c1. The mistake was partially corrected in FE (→EE), in which the slur combines d1-c1. The correct text is only in GE2.
