Issues : Inaccurate slurs in A

b. 228-229

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

End of slur in A, contextual interpretation

End of slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slur of A at the end of bar 228 clearly indicates a continuation to bar 229. Therefore, this is the version we adopt in the main text, although in bar 229 (on a new page) there is no ending of the slur.

Two slurs in A

One slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

Taking into account the erroneous beginning and end of the slur of GE1, it is difficult to assume that Chopin controlled this place. Therefore, in the main text we give the most likely interpretation of the slurs of A – due to the change of the page (from bar 249), the separation of the slurs can be questioned; however, according to us, neither the slur in bar 248 nor the one in bar 249 suggest an intention to combine them.

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur to bar 253 in A

Slur only in bar 252 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In A the slur at the end of bar 252 (the last one on the page) indicates an intention to lead it to the next bar, where the slur's ending was not written though. Perhaps it was the reason, together with an interrupted continuity of the sign caused by an uneven ink outflow, why the slur was shortened in the editions.

b. 256-257

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur only in bar 256 in A (literal reading→GEFEEE)

Slur to c1 in bar 257 in A (contextual interpretation)

..

In A it is unclear whether Chopin wanted to lead the slur only to the end of bar 256 or to the end of the solo part – a typical dilemma related to the transition to a new page. In the main text we adopt the second possibility, yet the version of the editions may be considered to be equal.

b. 268-269

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur to g in A (literal reading)

Slur to in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs only in bar 268 in GE (→FE)

Slurs to bar 269 in EE

..

When interpreted literally, the slur of A ends still in bar 268. According to us, the notation, however, does not exclude an intention of leading it to the last note of the phrase in the next bar. We suggest this interpretation, compliant with the phrase's structure, in the main text. Doubled slurs in the L.H. in the editions – see the note to bar 267.
