Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 143-144

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

The crotchets in the L.H. in the 2nd half of each of these bars are written in the sources in the treble clef, which raises doubts, as far as the validity of the accidentals from the 1st half is concerned:

  •  before e1 in bar 143 is present in all sources;
  •  before e1 in bar 144 was added in GE, FE4 and EE2;
  •  before e in bar 144 appears only in GE.

In the graphical layout adopted in the main text the signs are not necessary.

b. 165

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

FE (→EE) has a cautionary  before g2 in the 5th crotchet of the bar. It is hard to state how the difference between GC and FE occurred – the copyist might have simply overlooked this sign or realised that it is superfluous. Moreover, one cannot exclude an addition made to [A] after GC had already been prepared or a mistake of the engraver of FE

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

All sources include naturals before d2 in bar 175 and before in bar 176. Together with the  in bar 172 they prove that, after having changed the key signature signs, Chopin's awareness of the key in which the music is written was not entirely formed yet.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

FE1 (→FE2FE3) lacks in a  before the bottom most E1. Chopin corrected his oversight in GC (→GE), EE and FE4 also include the correct version.
In the proofreading of FE4, a cautionary  before e1 in the R.H. was also added. A similar addition was introduced in EE2.
