In the main text we give the version of FE4, being probably a result of Chopin's proofreading. Both source versions are equally justified with the voice leading:

  • b in FE4, together with the bottom notes of the adjacent chords of the R.H., creates a d1-c1-b-a line;
  • a in the remaining sources is a common note of four chords preparing the entrance of the second theme in bar 41.

In the main text we give a slur added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) as an undoubtedly later than the slur of GC and offering a better opportunity for an accurate recreation of Chopin's intention.

In FE1 there is no arpeggio sign at the beginning of the bar. It is certainly caused by the engraver's distraction.

FE1 (→FE2) has an e as the bottom note of the 1st minim in the L.H. This patent error was corrected in FE3 (→FE4). The remaining sources also include the correct text.

FE1 (→FE2) has a b-e1 minim here. The mistake resulted from an erroneous assignment of these notes to the bottom stave, where the bass clef is in force – the mistake's mechanism is easy to understand, looking at the notation of GC (most probably very similar to the notation of [A]). The mistake was corrected in FE3 (→FE4) and EE, mostly likely as a result of Chopin's intervention. GC (→GE) includes the correct text.
