Pedalling in GC & GE2

Pedalling in GE1

Pedalling in EE2

Our alternative suggestion

In the main text we give the pedalling added by Chopin in GC. It was inaccurately recreated in GE1 (without the last  sign, which was corrected in GE2 in accordance with GC. The pedalling of GE1 was also repeated in EE2, in which the overlooked  asterisk was also added, yet in a different place – on the basis of the previous bar.

The added pedalling differs from the indications in the analogous fragment of the exposition (bars 61-64). When interpreted literally, it rather indicates pedalling each of four bars of this phrase (the fourth without pedal). Therefore, it can be considered to be more careful and subtle, yet taking into account Chopin's visible haste at the time of adding it, one can also assume that the composer preferred to avoid risky indications, not having an absolute certainty. Hence, we suggest a pedalling based on the indications of the exposition as an alternative.
