Slurs in GE1

Slurs suggested by the editors

The slurring of the sources is inaccurate in this fragment, which may partially result from the careless notation of [A]. We find the following issues to be particularly questionable:

  • beginning of a new slur in bar 187, which is most probably a result of an oversight of the first part of this slur in FE1 (→FE2). It also cannot be excluded that the seemingly inaccurate ending of the slur in bars 185-186, added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE3, was actually supposed to indicate the slur's continuation;
  • combining the motif in bar 188, of a complementary character performed by the alto voice, with the ending of the previous phrase in bar 187 (GC and GE2, FE and EE). The clearly careless notation of GC, meticulously reproduced in GE2, allowed, however, the engraver of GE1 to accurately recreate the moment of the slur's rupture;
  • combining the motif in bar 188 with the beginning of the next phrase – here the engraver was probably misled by the too early started slur in bar 189.

In the main text we suggest a three- and one-bar slur, based on the precisely written analogous bars 57-60 and which can be considered to be interpretations of the slurs of GC.
