Slur in GC & EE

Slur in GE

The slightly inaccurate beginning of the slur of GC was certainly misinterpreted in GE as embracing entire bar 128. In FE the slurs were most probably overlooked, until bar 143. In the main text, we give the slur of EE, most probably added by Chopin in the base text to this edition.

The missing staccato dots in FE (→EE) seem to be an oversight of the engraver. The second dot in GC (in bar 156) blends into the  mistake, which explains its absence in GE.

According to us, the slurs of FE (→EE), more consistent, probably convey Chopin's notation in [A] more accurately than the slurs in GC. The latter are imprecise, so it is not obvious how they are meant to be understood, e.g., we interpret the beginning of the slur in bar 177 – differently than GE – as falling on the 2nd beat of the bar. It cannot be excluded that the slur beginning in bar 179 is supposed to be interpreted similarly.

The shorter slur of GE is, according to us, inaccurate, which can be partially attributed to the sweeping slur of GC.
