  b. 45

e in GC (→GE), FE1 (→FE2EE) & FES

g in FE3 (→FE4,FE5)

Chopin most probably hesitated between e and g on the 2nd quaver in the L.H. Initially – in [A] (→GCGE), →FE1FE2EE) – he wrote an e, which he then, in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4,FE5) changed to g. However, in FES the latter was deleted, restoring e, which indicates another change of the composer's decision. Both versions have their advantages:

  • g offers a more consistent movement of the voices of the accompaniment,
  • e gives a more gentle sound without the doubled third.

In the main text we give the version with e as probably the latest proved one (deletion in FES). The authenticity of this version is unquestionable, which is not entirely clear in the case of the version with g, as in the proofreading of FE3 there were misunderstandings and errors – cf. bar 20, as well as the 1st mov., bar 76 and 153-156 and the 2nd mov., bar 95.
