A short accent in GE (→FE→EE)

The first editions do not have any long accents other than the marks in bars 11 and 83 that could be interpreted as such. It is almost certain that this does not correspond to the notation of [A], as that type of accent belonged to Chopin's favourite markings. In the outer sections of the Nocturne, we propose long accents in the main text instead of short ones that appear in the editions, as we consider the former to be much more probable than the latter.

Bar 21 appears at the beginning of the system in GE (→FEEE); this is most probably the reason why the notation of slurs at the juncture of bars 20-21 is unclear. The curved line running from f sharp2 in bar 20 seems to be a tie, yet its ending in bar 21 is missing. Instead, bar  21 contains a line that clearly suggests a continuation of some phrasing slur from bar 20; as a result,  a single phrasing slur from the minim f sharp2 to b sharp1should be considered the only natural interpretation of both those lines. Still, a comparison with similar bars 25-26 and 91-92 makes one conclude that the notation of bar 21 is most probably erroneous, and that Chopin did not intend the slurring in that fragment to differ from the slurring found in its later repetitions.

The sources display the lower note of the octave E-e in an inaccurate or mistaken way. In GE the note-head is placed on the correct height but there is no ledger line, and FE (→EE) simply give F here.

In GE (→FE) notes of the R.H. rhythm are distributed in such a way that the quaver is aligned with the 6th L.H. note. In the editors' opinion, this probably does not reflect the notation of [A], and has no impact on the performance. In the main text, we apply the regular rhythmic notation, so did EE.

In GE (→FE) in bars 53-62, similarly to GE in bars 29-36, notes of the R.H. rhythm are distributed in such a way that the quaver is aligned with the 6th note of the L.H. In the editors' opinion, this probably does not reflect the notation of [A], and has no impact on the performance. We apply the regular rhythmic notation in the main text, so did EE.
