Slurs

b. 1-2

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

No slur in GE (→FE)

Slur in EE

..

The slur in EE is certainly an inauthentic addition. A similar revision was also introduced in EE in bars 84-85 and 86-87. Cf. Nocturne in D No 2, bars 2-6.

b. 8

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

A slur in GE (→FE

..

In EE, the slur erroneously extends only to e sharp2.

b. 20

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

Slur ending in GE (→FE)

Slur ending in EE

..

The limitation of the slur in EE only to the 1st half of the bar was surely linked with a misinterpretation of the subsequent slurs in this phrase.

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

Slurs in GE (→FEEE), literal reading

Slurs in GE (→FEEE), natural interpretation

Our proposition

..
Bar 21 appears at the beginning of the system in GE (→FEEE); this is most probably the reason why the notation of slurs at the juncture of bars 20-21 is unclear. The curved line running from f sharp2 in bar 20 seems to be a tie, yet its ending in bar 21 is missing. Instead, bar  21 contains a line that clearly suggests a continuation of some phrasing slur from bar 20; as a result,  a single phrasing slur from the minim f sharp2 to b sharp1should be considered the only natural interpretation of both those lines. Still, a comparison with similar bars 25-26 and 91-92 makes one conclude that the notation of bar 21 is most probably erroneous, and that Chopin did not intend the slurring in that fragment to differ from the slurring found in its later repetitions.

b. 26

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

FE (→EE)

..

In FE (→EE), bar 25 ends with a slur and a tie going into bar 26 on a new line of text. However, in bar 26 only one of the signs finds its continuation. From the notation it is difficult to conclude whether the omitted ending was a tie or a slur.
