Slurs

b. 46

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

FE (→EE1EE2)

..

The lack of slur in FE (→EE1EE2) is most probably the result of an oversight of the engraver. EE3 added a slur probably after GE1.

Slur placement in GE and EE

..

The pianistic context and the analogy with the preceding bar point to the correctness of the notation of GE. The FE version is most probably mistaken, that in EE is likely a revision following the above mentioned analogy.

Slur in GE1 (→FEEE)

No slur in GE2

..

The lack of slur in GE2 is certainly an error—GE2 was prepared on the basis of later, lithographed copies of GE1, where the slur is invisible due to a technical flaw.

Inaccurate slurring in FE, contextual interpretation

Three slurs in EE

..

GE encompasses the L.H. part in bars 53-64 with one slur running through three lines of text. There is no reason to doubt that this notation conforms with the one in [A]. Most probably due to engraver's carelessness FE shows inaccuracies in slurs notation at the changes of systems. osources contain inaccuracies related to the beginnings and endings of the slur in the left hand extended over 3 systems within bars 53-64. We adopt the notation of GE as the one that seems the most justified from the musical point of view.

b. 61-66

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

..

In GE the slur at the end of bar 65 points clearly to a continuation but there is not any in bar 66, first in a new system. A similar inaccuracy also occurs in an analogous situation in bars 73-74. Doubts about the compass of the slur are dispelled, in the editors' opinion, by the script in bars 69-70, where the slur reaches univocally the minim in bar 70.

FE repeats literally the unclear GE notation. The slur in EE ends in bar 66.
