b. 87-88

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

Tie and slur in GE, contextual interpretation

FE (→EE1EE2), contextual interpretation

EE3, contextual interpretation

..

GE lacks the ending of the tie sustaining f sharp2 into bar 88 that opens a new line of text in the sources. In FE (→EE1EE2) the tie from bar  87 was "finished" by beginning the phrasing slur in bar 88 clearly before the 1st note. That version is definitely erroneous (see bars 20-21). In EE3, the ending of the tie sustaining f sharp2was added in bar 88 to the inaccurately started slur, which brought the notation closer to the correct text.

We add a cautionary before e2. The accidental is also present in EE.

GE (→FEEE): semiquaver after the last note of the triplet

Notation in keeping with Chopin's understanding of this figure

..

In bar 88 in GE (→FEEE) the semiquaver in  was moved beyond the 3rd note of the triplet in the accompaniment. This inauthentic, misleading notation was used throughout the Nocturne.

See bars 5-13.

GE (→FEEE): semiquaver after the last note of the sextuplet

Notation in keeping with Chopin's understanding of this kind of figures

..

We align the semiquaver on the 2nd beat of bar 89 with the last quaver of the L.H. sextuplet although in this particular context an exception to the general rule could be admitted. Only a discovery of additional sources—e.g. [A] or an annotated copy—could assist in establishing Chopin's intention more firmly.

A short accent in GE (→FEEE)

Our suggestion—a long accent

..

We suggest a long accent probably used by Chopin in [A].
