b. 45-64

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Shorter  in A & GE1op (→GE2opGE3op)

Longer  in FE (→EE,GE1no2GE2no2)

..

The  hairpin in bars 45-48 is only in the version prepared for print; in FE the sign begins earlier than in A. The remaining editions convey the version of FE more or less accurately – in GE1op the signs are slightly shorter, almost the same as in A, while in EE and GEno2 they are slightly longer. Since the exact differences are of no practical meaning here, we divide them into two groups, corresponding with the range either to the sign in A or in FE.
In bars 61-64 the hairpin is absent in the previous manuscripts, there are also no differences in the length of the sign in the remaining sources.

b. 65-93

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

..

The pedalling is only in the version prepared for print – As and AI have no indications. In the main text, we reproduce the notation of A. In the editions, the  signs were placed inaccurately in many situations, e.g., in bars 66, 70 and analog. after the 3rd crotchet or under it instead before. Other, more significant differences are discussed separately – cf. bars 72, 73, 75-76, 85-86 and 88-89.

b. 68-69

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

..

Both the tie of b and the phrase mark over the three-note progression of bass in A were reproduced in FE with mistakes, significantly impeding guessing their correct meaning. As a result, the phrase mark was reproduced correctly only in GE2op (→GE3op). See the note on ties.

Slur to f1 in AI & FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEC)

Slur to g1 in A, EEW1 (→EEW2), GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

..

The slur of AI reflects the original assumptions underlying the phrasing – it encompasses exactly 4 bars. In A, Chopin encompassed the entire first phrase with a slur, which, however, was not precisely reproduced in FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEC), perhaps due to the line of the text ending in bar 68. In subsequent editions, the slur was extended according to the musical sense.

No sign in GE & EEC

..

The range of the  hairpin in A is not entirely clear – the mark's arms are of different length and it goes beyond the bar line ending bar 76 and the line of the text. The mark in FE could have been added in the last proofreading, together with the correction of the part of the L.H. – it is indicated by the fact that it was completely omitted in GE. The absence of the mark in EEC is probably due to an oversight. In the main text, we assume a possibly literal interpretation of the sign on the basis of A.
