  b. 75-76

d3 repeated in As, AI & A (→FEEEC,EEW1)

d3 tied in GE & EEW2

The issue of authenticity of the ties of the d3 notes in bars 75-76 and 91-92 seems to be impossible to be settled on the basis of the existing sources and information. It is difficult to ascribe the changes introduced in GE in the Waltz in A major, No. 3, bars 49 and 60 to a revision, which means that most probably there was a formula of the Chopin proofreading of Op. 64. Therefore, it is possible that both the ties added in GE, even the ones that are not confirmed by entries in FED, are also authentic. However, since there is also evidence confirming actions of revisers in the course of preparing GE,1, it is not certain whether the given addition is not an effect of this kind of actions.

The authenticity of all ties added in GE (seven ties in total – four discussed in bars 66-71, two discussed here and one in bars 81-82) is supported by:

  • confirmation of the majority of them with entries – probably with Chopin's hand – in FED (see bars 66-71), and in the case of the tie in bars 81-82 – with the version of A;
  • no indication to introduce corrections – it is only the addition of ties in bars 66-67 and 70-71 that can be considered to be justified by analogy to bars 82-83 and 86-87, which include authentic ties;
  • selectivity – no ties were added at the transition between bars 74-75.

However, we would like to highlight once again that confirmations – e.g. by other sources – of authenticity of some of the changes cannot be considered to be conclusive in the case of others.

We still have to consider the relation of the tie of d3 in bars 75-76 to various versions of the accompaniment in this place. According to us, the part of the L.H., given in the main text and corrected by Chopin – see the note on the bottom stave – cannot be used simultaneously with the tied d3 in the melody. It would then deprive the beginning of the bar from any strike and such syncopations are unprecedented in Chopin's Waltzes (with one, not entirely confirmed exception).
