Slur from bar 93 in As

Slurs in AI, literal reading

Slurs in AI, contextual interpretation

Continuous slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

The slur of As, beginning from bar 93 and breaking at the beginning of bar 95, is of a rather sketchy nature and it was most probably supposed to be an origin of a slur leading to bar 97. At the same time, it is unclear whether the mark applied also to the 4th version of bars 95-96, added as a complement to the 3rd version.

Our contextual interpretation of the slurring of AI is based on the following conditions:

  • the ending of the slur in bar 90, the last one in the line of the text, clearly suggests its continuation. However, the missing slur in bar 91 hampers the determination of the range of the slur intended by Chopin with certainty. Taking into account the shape of the melody and its relation to the harmonic base – delay and its resolution on the first two beats of the bar – the ending of the slur already on fmay be excluded with high probability;
  • if Chopin had wished for a one continuous slur (like in the final version), the notation of a new slur from bar 92 would have been very inaccurate. Therefore, it is most likely that Chopin wanted to start a new slur exactly from bar 92 or slightly earlier, as long as we allow the possibility of slight inaccuracies;
  • hints concerning Chopin's intention may be found in analogous bar 75. The beginning of a new slur, written undoubtedly from the dcrotchet, leads to – considering the two previous points – the interpretation we present.
