Pedalling

b. 5-28

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

No markings in As, AII & AIII

Pedalling in AI & A (→FEGE,EE)

..

Among the early autographs, it is only AI that includes a detailed pedalling. In the subsequent notes we do not record the missing indications in As, AII and AIII. Similarly in the case of dynamic signs.

b. 25

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

No pedalling in AII, AIII & A (→FEGE,EEC)

Pedalling in AI & EEW1 (→EEW2)

Our variant suggestion

..

The omission of pedalling in this bar seems to be a mistake of Chopin in A (→FEGE,EEC). The indications were added in EEW1 (→EEW2), the pedalling is also in AI, yet a different part of the L.H. in this autograph does not allow for an automatic introduction of the indication written there to the published version. Therefore, in the main text we signalise the missing pedalling in the final version with the help of brackets.

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

Pedalling in AI

No markings in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

In AI the pedalling is still marked in these bars, however, it concerns another version of the L.H. – cf. bars 21-24 and the adjacent note. Due to this reason, we do not suggest it in the main text, even in a variant form. On the other hand, the version of the accompaniment, used here in A (→FEGE,EE), was provided with pedalling by Chopin in bars 21-24, so the absence of indications does not mean prohibition of the use of pedal, but rather the absence of the necessity of its use.

b. 62-94

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

..

Same as on the previous pages, we remind about the total absence of pedalling in As, AII and AIII. The differing indications between the remaining sources are discussed in separate notes, in bars 66-67 and 69.

Except for pedalling in AI, there are not any performance indications, apart from slurs, in any of the previous autographs.

Pedalling in AI, contextual interpretation

Pedalling in AI, alternative interpretation

No markings in remaining sources

..

Chopin's indicating the pedalling in AI in bar 66 is undoubtedly related to the fact of playing the bass note on the 1st beat of the bar, present in this autograph, which makes the figure of the accompaniment in this bar to be closely analogous to the previous ones. However, the  sign in bar 67 poses a mystery, as it is difficult to indicate a possible scenario leading to the creation of this mistake. Therefore, we suggest both possibilities of correcting the notation, giving priority to the one in which we consider the notation to be unfinished.
