The single A in EE1 (→EE2) is the original version. It is proved by visible corrections performed by Chopin in A (→GE) and FE. The version with octave was introduced in EE3, most probably on the basis of GE. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections in GC |

GE overlooked the staccato dot at the beginning of the bar. It is most probably a result of an erroneous interpretation of Chopin correction in A. The dot was also deleted in EE3, perhaps as a side effect of adopting the version with the octave from GE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors resulting from corrections , Errors in GE |

In A, FE and EE1 there are no cautionary flats on the 3rd quaver in the bar. The sign in the R.H. was added in GE1 and EE2 (→EE3), in the L.H. – in GE2 (→GE3). In the main text we consider both. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , GE revisions |

The change of pedal marked only in FE is opposed to the harmonic pedalling prevailing in this Etude and generally used by Chopin. Assuming an unidentified misunderstanding, to the main text we adopt the version of A (→GE) and EE1 (the later EE repeat the notation of FE), in which the entire spread chord resounds on pedal. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions |

Out of the three most probably authentic, slightly differing variants of placement of the cresc. - - indication we choose the version of FE as combining their most reliable elements – earlier beginning (FE and EE) and earlier ending (A and FE). It is worth observing that the fact of writing the cres abbreviation earlier in A was related to an impending smearing of the part of the L.H., which could have had an influence on the "compromise" shift of the indication. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions |
