In the main text we give the fingering written with Chopin's hand in FED, analogous with the compatible in both copies fingering of bar 22. We also add the '5' numeral at the beginning of the run, drawn from FES, as from the written indications it stems that the fingering of the initial six notes was supposed to be the same in both copies.
The next two numerals written in FES – 21 for g
-a
– result in a set of fingers being uncomfortable to such an extent that it seems impossible that Chopin could have indicated such a fingering to the pupil. The digits are written in ink, with Miss Stirling's hand, however, these fragments of pencilled Chopin entries, which can be seen beneath the ink, do not indicate her mistake at the time of copying. According to us, it is Chopin himself that committed a mistake, mislead with the lack of necessary accidentals, while the introduced fingering concerns the g-a notes. The mistake could have remained unnoticed, as at the time of trying the fingering with the L.H. only, without the R.H., determining the harmony, the sound of the passage in this form does not raise any doubts (it could have been used, e.g., against the background of the D minor chord). Eventually, Chopin decided to simplify this place and he did not have an opportunity to detect the mistake. A more accurate examination of the entries in FED reveals that the same mistake could have been committed also there – the big '4' numeral over a, devoid of 
, seems to be a result of a correction consisting in replacing with it two previously written numerals, perhaps '21'. Here the mistake was noticed, which is clearly indicated by the added 
raising g to g.
The last four numerals of the fingering of FES already concern the simplified version, which results from placing them under the added semiquaver beam – cf. bar 22, in which the placement of the last fingering numeral ('1') does not include the added beam yet.
The fingering of EE2 (→EE3), being contrary to the Chopin one, cannot be authentic.
