b. 1-8
|
composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major
..
In the entire Etude, in all manuscripts some of the repeating figures were written in an abbreviated manner using the // or •/• signs. CDP includes the highest number of such abbreviations, while A – the lowest (they appear only in bar 12, they are absent in bars 1-8). In CDP the abbreviated notation of the part of the L.H. in bars 1-2 is not clear – already the second figure in bar 1 is written as repetition of the first. If interpreted literally, it would mean that the bass note in these bars is eight times A1, which, from the piano interpretation point of view, is inacceptable. category imprint: Differences between sources |

b. 9-18
|
composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major
..
In these bars, the abbreviated notation of the repeating figures (see bars 1-8) appears in all three manuscripts: AI, A, and CDP. In the copy, starting from the end of bar 12, it is the use of up to four variants of the repetition sign that draws attention. According to us, the reason could have been the appearance of such signs, different than the ones used by the copyist, in the copied autograph – the first of atypical for CDP signs appears in the same bar in which a similar sign (with two bars) is written in A. We consider the notation of A in bar 17 to be inaccurate – see the note to this bar. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Abbreviated notation of A |

b. 19-28
|
composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major
..
In these bars Chopin still uses abbreviated notation of the repeating figures (cf. bars 1-8 and 9-18) in all three manuscripts – AI, A and CDP. The number of repetition signs, which in this fragment have already the "Chopin" // form (see also bars 26-27), is still the highest in CDP. In bar 19, we consider the notation of A to be inaccurate – see the note to this bar. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Abbreviated notation of A |

b. 31-38
|
composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major
..
From bar 35 to the end of the Etude, Chopin, in both autographs – AI and A – used an abbreviated notation of the repeating figures on a number of occasions (cf., e.g. bars 1-8 and 9-18). Interestingly enough, the notation of AI is more precise, as it includes the differences in the size of the note heads. We consider the notation of A in bars 35 and 36 to be inaccurate in this respect. The abbreviation used in CDP in bar 31 is most probably an arbitrary decision of the copyist. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Abbreviated notation of A |

b. 39-47
|
composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major
..
The final section of the Etude, plenty of repeating figures, is written in all manuscripts – AI, A and CDP – with as frequent use of // repetition signs as possible. Same as before (cf., e.g., bar 19), we consider the notation of A in bars 41-43, which does not include the difference of size of the bass notes' heads, to be inaccurate. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Abbreviated notation of A , Inaccuracies in A |
