Issues : Errors in FE

b. 29

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

A-B in A, FE2 (→EE) & GE5

A-B suggested by the editors

A-B in FE1

A-B in GE1 (→GE2)

A-H in GE3 (→GE4)

..

The oversight of  in FE1 (→EE) next to the second grace note could have been caused by the unclear notation of A – due to the cramped notation of grace notes (probably added later)  is almost illegible. The correct version was returned in FE2 (→EE), most probably as a result of Chopin's correction. In GE1 (→GE2) the clearly erroneous version of FE1 was revised, by changing the 1st grace note to A. Another revision was performed in GE3 (→GE4), by deleting the  next to the 1st grace note. The correct text was introduced only in GE5, probably after comparison with FE2.

In the main text we remove the unnecessary  next to the minim, most probably being a trace of the original version without the grace notes beginning the trill.

Slur in A & GE2 (→GE#→GE4GE5)

No slur in FE (→GE1,EE)

..

In FE (→GE1,EE) the engraver overlooked the slur for the R.H. The overlooked slur was added by the reviser of GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5), probably after the notation in analogous bar 12.

Slur in A

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The lack of slur to the bottom voice of the R.H. is almost certainly an arbitrary decision of the engraver of FE1, who, aiming at a faithful reproduction of the graphic layout of A (the dots and slur over the notes, between the R.H. voices), was not able to fit the slur in a legible manner.

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

..

In A Chopin undoubtedly overlooked the  raising g1 to g1 in the written grupetto. He did not correct the mistake in the proofreadings of FE either. The necessary sign was added only by the revisers of GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) & EE2.

..

The undoubtedly long accent, written by Chopin in A, was overlooked by the engraver of FE. In GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) a short accent was added, most probably after analogous notation in bar 76.
